Samia Suluhu Hassan is currently the Vice President of Tanzania and the first woman to be elected to such a high position in Tanzania’s Government, but who exactly is Samia Suluhu Hassan?
Samia was born on 27th of January in 1960. Samia was born in the Sultanate of Zanzibar. She graduated with an advanced Diploma in Public Administration in Muzembe University before earning a postgraduate Diploma in Economics from the University of Manchester.
In the year 2000, Samia joined the political arena from where she was elected as a special seat member to the Zanzibar house of representatives, a position that elevated her status owing to the fact that she was one of the few women selected to hold such a seat.
In 2010, Samia contested for the Makunduchi parliamentary seat where he was declared the winner after garnering almost 80% of the total votes. During Jakaya Kikwete’s reign as Tanzania’s President, Samia was appointed as Minister of State for Union Affairs. Samia also participated in drafting Tanzania’s constitution in 2014.
In 2015 during the general elections in Tanzania, the late John Pombe Magufuli chose Samia as his running mate for the Presidential seat courtesy of Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM), where they won and so Samia Suluhu became the first female Vice President in Tanzania, a memory that will forever exist in the books of history.
